This was quite awesome to do. We had to draw from life from a statue that showed how the muscles work, so no skin. And next to it we had a skeleton and we had to fit the bones into the statue on a see trough paper. Fun challenge and I think it looks quite neat.

Musk Ox

Musk oxen live and survive in temperatures as low as -100 degrees Fahrenheit. To help reduce the impact of the cold, musk oxen have developed spiraled nasal cavities. This feature increases the surface area of the nasal passage, allowing for greater ease in warming the air entering the  lungs.

How do these compare to nasal condiles in, say cows, which are very thin and tightly spiraled bone?

Hey! So, I don’t have the best comparative collection for nasal turbinates as they’re pretty fragile and a lot of these skulls have literally gone back and forth across the country with me. But in comparison with what I have, it seems like the nasal concha of musk oxen are simply more robust than other Artiodactyla. 

First there’s the cow which seems to have a really robust premaxilla. Next is the moose which looks to have quite an elongated premaxilla, which is likely its own way of dealing with the cold temperatures. At the bottom is caribou that seems to be the median of all of these examples.
